Title says it all – no time to write about the AUK conference today as been a full on day with a little boy who needed me – as expected. There have been a few posts already I have seen and more to come I suspect. I shall probably write something tomorrow at work knowing me.
Still buzzing a bit and realising little things about Sqk that make more sense. Like this evening, he decided to want to run in circles – which is one of his ways to regulate. So DH & I encouraged him to run round a rug on the floor in open space rather than round his wooden railway on floor in the lounge where I was sat with my laptop.
As I said to DH, regulation is key for us even though for now we have one of the third of adopted children who appear to have no/few issues. Sqk is pretty good on the whole with little sign of issues from his adoption other than being a little immature socially/emotionally for his age. But we have a child who from birth has been given consistent care – from 5 weeks old the same person who loves him and has helped his brain to wire appropriately and also given him a good internal template. Given he was over 2 when he moved in with us we know this is incredibly lucky as he seems to have a brain that understands attachment and is showing real signs of attachment to us.
Still regulation is needed – and we are learning the ways to help Sqk regulate when he gets dysregulated. As DH put it earlier today – this is where we differ from birth parents as we have not had the time with him to completely get all his cues. We are getting there though and we are getting less full blown distress tantrums – which may in part by due to him growing up but also as we are both starting to realise when he needs help and giving it to him. I am going to be interested in what his keyworker at nursery says on Friday as he seems to be settling well there. However I have warned them he is likely to become much more unsettled in December as routine starts to go and as we transition him to his new childminder.
Hopefully a proper post on what I learnt from the conference tomorrow – I have pages of notes – you can tell I am an academic by profession & vocation….
