A long time with no update

It must definitely has been – 22nd February was last time I posted here I realise!! Well other than my Instagram feed posts that is.

A lot of reasons behind this-  mainly not to do with Sqk as such. I took over as the local Adoption UK coordinator at the start of the year so trying to plan that. But mainly it has been work related stuff. This year we had the re-accreditation of our programmes by the IET to confirm they meet the required standards for partial or full CEng status. This basically happens in a big way every 5 years and is incredibly important. As the person in charge of the UG programmes I had a lot of work to do on top of my hectic teaching schedule so I’ve just neglected the blog in favour of playing computer games in an evening (to relieve the stress). This week we had the visit and I feel we got the best outcome we could have – 5 years for most things but 3 years for my specific area only because they need to see investment in our labs (20 years+ since had anything major) otherwise it would have been 5 years. While I was off on adoption leave the programmes went through a major restructure (not in content terms but in structure and organisation of content) so I thought we’d be given 2 years till first students graduate from new programmes. I was at work 7.30am – 7.40pm Tuesday and then did another 2.5 hours a home to create a visual map of old programmes to new programmes – which convinced the panel that it wasn’t a major revision in their terms – which they had indicated concern over during the day. Felt vindicated on amount of work on result.

Poor Sqk however has been incredibly clingy for the last 10 days or so – we disturbed him Friday before last when due to a Board of Examiners (which I had to be at for it to be a valid board) he spent the morning with Daddy not Mummy. Then last Saturday he went out for afternoon with DH and his parents as I had to take our cat to vet for vaccinations (before they became overdue). Sunday was a strange day celebrating the baptism and adoption of a little boy close to us. So by the time he saw Mummy for 15 minutes in total on Tuesday he was wobbly. Childminder & nursery have seen some of the fallout on Wednesday, but I have had a limpet as much as he can be since then. I refused to attend a research seminar I should of at work on Wednesday as I knew this would be the case and went on nursery farm trip as volunteer helper yesterday.

We are down in Newport for a flying visit as one of our great friends (whom Sqk loves) is down here – they have a special bond we realised while away over Easter that we want to promote. Hence drive down here after DH finished work yesterday and drive back tomorrow.

As a family we have shared some lovely times since I last posted – my birthday was quiet (hectic at work) but over Easter we got together with all our close friends to celebrate it properly. Hired house close to Matlock and had a great time. Celebrated the engagement of another friend at same time plus news that DH’s best man and his husband are moving to North Wales – so hopefully might see more of them as well. We had a week in North Wales (with caravan on Anglesey) at start of this month – good time although some fun with wind. We took our awning down – think others were forced to do so in middle of night. Took Sqk to many places with special memories for us – we got engaged on Anglesey some 9 years ago – and it was on the front at Conwy that we got the call that pressed fast forward on Sqk’s placement back in early September 2013. It is also where DH spent 6 months on hospital pre-reg placement and his first 6 months working following qualification plus spent a lot of his childhood holidays. Sqk just enjoyed the freedom to run and explore on the campsite.

Worked out that 4 weeks today we shall be down with caravan close to Cambridge to introduce Sqk to a part of the world that has a special place to me. We will take him to village churchyard where the ashes of two of my grandparents are buried (it is 2 years ago today that we went to the funeral of Grandma) – and where I am probably related to at least a  quarter of the people buried there. Plus see my Great Aunt & Uncle and introduce Sqk to them and hopefully visit the beach that has many memories for me.

It’s funny – I moved around a lot as a child but two parts of England have always been ‘home’ to me – the Yorkshire Dales area and the Norfolk & Norfolk/Suffolk border. The areas my grandparents lived in when I was younger so I suppose the areas that represent the most stability to me.

This has been a rambling post – but all in all Sqk is doing well. We are planning transition to reception in September – hopefully a meeting in next week or so once we know who his teacher will be. He is really settled with his childminder and we are all working on his social/emotional skills to help him catch up. I just hope starting school doesn’t cause him to become really wobbly – we are playing it by ear and seeing how it goes. As always learning to have some ideas if things go not well but hoping and praying for a reasonable time. The toddler who arrived in our lives coming on 21 months ago is very much a little boy today….
